Fall Gardening in Minnesota: What to Plant and How to Prep for Winter

Fall Gardening

As summer fades, fall offers opportunities for planting and preparation:

  • Garlic and Shallots: Plant in late September to early October for a summer harvest.
  • Spring Bulbs: Daffodils, tulips, and crocuses should be planted before the ground freezes.
  • Cover Crops: Sow clover, winter rye, or oats to add nutrients and prevent erosion.

Clear dead plants, add compost to garden beds, and protect perennials with a thick mulch layer. Clean and store tools, and drain hoses and rain barrels to prevent winter damage.
