Deer Resistant

Deer eating your plants is upsetting and while there are various methods to keep deer away, your best bet is to plant deer-resistant flowers. These are usually annual and perennial flowers with a strong fragrance or taste, coarse or fuzzy texture, or plants that are toxic to deer. Note that being deer-resistant does not mean that deer won’t ever damage your plants, if they are hungry enough because there is no other food, they will seek out almost any vegetation in your landscape.

These plants either have a toxin the deer prefer not to eat, or they just don’t smell good to them:

  • Coneflower
  • Daffodils
  • Poppies
  • Peonies
  • Bleeding Hearts
  • Lily of the Valley
  • Marigold

Natural Deer Deterrents

There are natural deterrents you can try to keep deer away from your plants although the animals become accustomed to deterrents and learn quickly so it’s important to change your scare tactics every now and then.

  • Visual deterrents: Scarecrows, flags, motion-activated strobe lights
  • Audio deterrents: Cans on strings, motion-activated alarms (if they don’t disturb your neighbors)
  • Physical deterrents: Motion-activated sprinklers
